The ABCs of Heart Health: Small Steps That Make a Big Difference

Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death, but many risk factors can be reduced through simple, consistent health choices. Understanding and practicing the “ABCs” of heart health can significantly lower the risk of heart disease.

According to health data in Missouri, the Black/African American population experiences the highest death rates from heart disease, followed closely by American Indian and Alaska Native populations. These disparities highlight the importance of awareness, prevention, and access to care.

Health professionals emphasize the ABCs of heart health:

  • A – Aspirin therapy, when recommended by a healthcare provider

  • B – Blood pressure control

  • C – Cholesterol management

  • S – Smoking cessation

In addition to the ABCs, daily lifestyle habits play a critical role in heart health. Moving more, preparing balanced and nutritious meals, managing stress, and getting quality sleep all support cardiovascular wellness.

Heart health is whole-body health. Caring for your heart means caring for your overall well-being.

This Heart Month, health leaders encourage individuals to speak with their healthcare providers about personal risk factors and to commit to heart-smart choices that can make a lasting impact.
