January is National Blood Donor Month, and BJC HealthCare is encouraging community members to consider donating blood as national supplies reach critical levels.
According to the American Red Cross, the country is currently experiencing a severe blood shortage, particularly for Type O, A negative, and B negative blood. Winter weather, seasonal illnesses, and holiday disruptions have significantly reduced donations, causing blood inventories to fall to emergency levels and placing patients at risk.
Blood donations are essential for hospitals to care for patients undergoing surgery, cancer treatments, trauma care, and other lifesaving medical procedures. A single blood donation can help save multiple lives, making it one of the most immediate ways individuals can support patient care in their community.
BJC HealthCare encourages anyone who is eligible to consider donating blood during National Blood Donor Month and throughout the winter season. Maintaining an adequate blood supply ensures hospitals are prepared to care for patients every day.
