SMTS Breaks Ground on New St. Francois County Facility

The Park Hills–Leadington Chamber of Commerce was proud to join Southeast Missouri Transportation Service, Inc., also known as SMTS, for today’s groundbreaking at 3343 Commonwealth Drive, Park Hills, MO (the former Missouri State Highway Patrol building) marking the start of a remodel and expansion that will strengthen transit service across St. Francois County and beyond.

The project will renovate the existing 3,795-sq-ft building to include office space, a drivers’ lounge, kitchenette, a training room, and light vehicle maintenance areas. It also upgrades a 202-sq-ft storage building and adds a 160-foot covered parking structure equipped with a wash bay, vacuum, and proper electrical service to support charging, maintenance, and security, creating a centralized, purpose-built hub for the county’s SMTS fleet.
Once complete, the Park Hills site will serve as a localized location for training and operations for SMTS personnel, helping the organization continue its mission of door-to-door transportation for medical appointments, groceries, social needs, and more throughout 21 counties in southeast and south-central Missouri.

Today’s ceremony follows SMTS’s long history of public service. Founded in 1973 and operating as a non-governmental, non-profit provider, SMTS is recognized as one of the nation’s leading rural transit systems, with a fleet serving communities across the region.

The Chamber warmly welcomes SMTS as a new Chamber member and congratulates their team on this investment in St. Francois County’s mobility infrastructure. We look forward to celebrating construction progress and the positive impact this facility will bring to residents, businesses, and visitors throughout our region!
