Mineral Area College’s student movie club, MACFlix, continues to offer free movies this winter and spring in the Fine Arts Theater at the Park Hills campus.
MACFlix continues its 4th annual winter-spring film series on Saturday, Feb. 4, with a presentation of the classic Mel Brooks comedy, “Young Frankenstein,” at 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theater on the Park Hills campus. Admission is free to everyone. MACFlix presents all films in their original, large, widescreen format along with an outstanding sound system.
Dr. Kevin White, sponsor of MACFlix, said “Young Frankenstein” is one of Mel Brooks’s funniest movies, released in 1974.
When the will of Victor Frankenstein (the famous scientist who attempted to reanimate dead bodies) is opened, his grandson, Frederick (a skilled neurosurgeon who has spent his life disassociating himself from his family’s name), must travel to the infamous castle to settle loose ends.
Upon arrival, Frederick discovers a book about his grandfather's experiments and realizes that they might actually work. Assisted by Igor, the grandson of the Igor who assisted Victor Frankenstein, and Inga, an attractive lab assistant, he successfully reanimates a body…. accidentally using an abnormal brain. The creature soon escapes and creates havoc throughout the countryside.
“Young Frankenstein is a nostalgic, hilarious tribute spoofing the classic horror films created by Universal Studios during the 1930s,” White said. “Everything is just right in the look of the film, which adds to the homage: pristine black & white cinematography, production design that uses many of the authentic Universal sets and direct references to Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein, Son of Frankenstein and Ghost of Frankenstein. Brooks leaves nothing out and delivers the most complete film of his career, presenting a wonderful balance between belly laughs galore and sentiment for the original material.“
A critical favorite and box office smash, Young Frankenstein ranks No. 13 on the American Film Institute’s list of “The 100 Funniest Movies of All-Time.” In 2003, Young Frankenstein was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, with the Library of Congress deeming it "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.”
The remaining MACFlix Classic Film Series includes:
- Saturday, March 25, 7 p.m., “Judgment at Nuremberg;”
- Saturday, April 29, 7 p.m., “Rio Bravo;”
- Saturday, May 6, 7 p.m., “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner;” and
- Saturday, May 13, 7 p.m., “Twilight, Eclipse: Riffed Live, Unmercifully.”
White said the movies are digitally re-mastered and presented with an extremely, high-quality projector/sound system in a Theater environment. “The films shimmer beautifully on our specially-built widescreen, so the effect is like walking through a time machine and watching the movies in their very first weekend of release,” White said. “They're amazing to watch!”
