MACFlix Club to Offer Free Showing of "Horse Feathers"
PARK HILLS, Mo. – Mineral Area College’s student movie club, MACFlix, continues to offer free movies this winter and spring in the Fine Arts Theatre at the Park Hills campus.
MACFlix continues its 4th annual winter-spring film series on Saturday, Feb. 6, with a presentation of the classic Marx Brothers comedy, “Horse Feathers,” at 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre on the Park Hills campus. Admission is free to everyone. MACFlix presents all films in their original, large, widescreen format along with an outstanding sound system.
Dr. Kevin White, sponsor of MACFlix, said “Horse Feathers” is one of the Marx Brothers’ funniest movies, released in 1932. Groucho plays the part of a Huxley University president who is badgered by his son, played by Zeppo Marx, to improve the school’s football team by hiring professional players. In a series of zany events, bootleggers are recruited instead, and they threaten to wreak havoc on the team, the university, and anything else they come across.
White said this mad-cap film is known for its fast-paced, non-sequitur, inconsistent nature, as was typical of all Marx Brothers films.
“The plot affords many opportunities for the comedic team to show off their anarchic style of humor, with many pun-filled, absurd, nonsensical bits of dialogue, insults, idiosyncracies, and one-liners,” White said. “The climax of the film, the big football game between the two rival colleges, is listed #1 on ESPN's ‘Top 10 Football Movie Scenes.’”
The remaining MACFlix Classic Film Series includes:
- Saturday, March 19, 7 p.m., “The Searchers;”
- Saturday, April 9, 7 p.m., “The Day the Earth Stood Still;” and
- Saturday, May 7, 7 p.m., “Strangers on a Train.”
White said the movies are digitally re-mastered and presented with an extremely, high-quality projector/sound system in a theatre environment. “The films shimmer beautifully on our specially-built widescreen, so the effect is like walking through a time machine and watching the movies in their very first weekend of release,” White said. “They're amazing to watch!”
