MACFlix Club to Feature “Witness”
Mineral Area College’s student movie club, MACFlix, is once again offering free movies this fall on the outdoor big-screen on the Park Hills campus quadrangle (the waterfall area).
MACFlix continues its 6th annual "Drive-In Nights" Saturday, Sept. 23, with a free, widescreen presentation of the 1985 crime classic “Witness,” (rated R) at 7:30 p.m. and admission is free to everyone. MACFlix presents all films in their original, large, widescreen format in Blu-ray quality visuals along with an outstanding sound system.
Dr. Kevin White, sponsor of MACFlix, said the movie was chosen because the film was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won two, for Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing. It was also nominated for seven BAFTA Awards and for six Golden Globe Awards.
The synopsis:
When a young Amish woman, Rachel (Kelly McGillis), and her son, Samuel (Lukas Haas), get caught up in the murder of an undercover narcotics agent, their rescuer turns out to be hardened Philadelphia detective John Book (Harrison Ford). Ford is sensational as Book, the cop who turns head-on into the non-violent world of the Pennsylvania Amish community. The film is an action-packed struggle of life and death interwoven with a sensitive undercurrent of caring and forbidden love.
Witness was made on a budget of $12 million and went on to make almost $69 million worldwide in the United States alone.
White said the movies are digitally re-mastered and presented with an extremely, high-quality projector/sound system in a theater environment. “The films shimmer beautifully on our specially-built widescreen, so the effect is like walking through a time machine and watching the movies in their very first weekend of release,” White said. “They're amazing to watch!”
Please bring lawn chairs and/or blankets to view film within the quad.
Some concessions will be available for purchase including soda, candy and chips.
