Arts Council to Bring “Grupo Atlántico” to the Mineral Area
Mineral Area Council on the Arts is joining in the fiesta of Hispanic Heritage Month and bringing a Colombian folk dancing powerhouse, Grupo Atlántico, to the Fine Arts Theater on Mineral Area College’s Park Hills campus. The performance is set for 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 15.
Tickets are $5 and may be purchased online via Eventbrite.com, at the Mineral Area College Bookstore, and at the door.
Grupo Atlántico, based in St. Louis, is an ensemble of folk dancers whose purpose is to share the rich tri-ethnic heritage (African, Indian and Spanish roots) of the Caribbean and coastal regions of Colombia, South America. The music, rhythms and percussive instruments, as well as the symbolism of costumes, dance steps and body movements evoke the centuries of Hispanic influence on the world. The group’s joyous, earthy dance traditions of Latin America offer exciting glimpses of authentic Colombian Carnival, Native American customs, African and Spanish artistic influences in the New World.
“We make an effort each season to present a multicultural arts experience for our community,” Basler said, “The dancers and musicians of Grupo Atlántico will leave a lasting impression on our audience, who will walk away a new appreciation and knowledge of the traditional music and dance of several South American and Caribbean countries.”
Grupo Atlántico kicks off the Mineral Area Council on the Arts’ 2016-2017 Performance Season. Beginning at this event and following at several others throughout the season, the organization will pay homage to past Mineral Area Council on the Arts Board of Directors from throughout the years.
