Mineral Area College will host Understanding Poverty on May 7, 2026, at the MAC Tech Building from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This comprehensive training is presented in partnership with East Missouri Action Agency and the Missouri Department of Social Services.
This full-day program is designed for individuals who work with the public, including business leaders, community organizations, social service agencies, and employers. The training aims to provide a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by individuals and families living in poverty, while equipping participants with practical tools and strategies to better serve their communities.
The event will consist of two primary components:
Poverty Simulation:
An interactive, live-action experience in which participants assume the roles of individuals and families navigating low-income circumstances. This simulation provides valuable insight into the realities of poverty and helps to challenge common stereotypes by fostering empathy and understanding.
Bridges Out of Poverty Workshop:
A structured training that offers a comprehensive framework for understanding poverty through the lens of economic class. Participants will explore the causes of poverty, examine resources necessary for stability, and gain practical strategies to improve outcomes within their organizations and communities. Key topics include the hidden rules of economic classes, the impact of environment on communication and decision-making, and the importance of social capital and support systems.
Participants will leave with actionable tools to strengthen relationships, improve service delivery, and contribute to long-term community stability.
Lunch will be provided. Attendance is limited to 50 participants, and advance registration is required.
