Parkland Health Center Celebrates Completion of Emergency Department Expansion
Parkland Health Center marked the completion of a major expansion of its emergency department with a ribbon cutting ceremony held at its Farmington location October 12. Farmington Regional Chamber of Commerce guests were on hand to celebrate with hospital officials. The project began with a ground-breaking ceremony on May 5, 2016, and the emergency department has remained fully functioning throughout the entire construction and renovation process.
The expansion added 6,300 square feet to the existing emergency department, including 11 additional patient treatment rooms, waiting room space, and an enclosed walkway that connects the main hospital entrance to the emergency department waiting area. In addition to the newly constructed space, 2,950 square feet of existing space has been modified as part of this expansion project.
The emergency department at Parkland-Farmington was previously expanded in 2008 when BJC HealthCare invested in a new emergency facility that doubled the square footage and capacity of the facility.
Volume at Parkland’s emergency departments (Farmington and Bonne Terre locations combined) has steadily increased in recent years. As expected, the need for additional capacity grew following the closure of the Weber Road emergency department. Statistics for 2016 show a total of 46,654 emergency department visits at Parkland Health Center.
Tom Karl, president of Parkland Health Center, stated, “Once again, BJC HealthCare has responded to the urgent need for enhanced emergency department services in St. Francois and surrounding counties. Expanding and renovating a large emergency department while it remains open and fully functioning is an extremely complex undertaking. I am proud of our leadership team, our emergency staff, and the multitude of skilled professionals who worked diligently toward the successful completion of this massive project.”
Dr. Bruce Harrison, medical director, added, “The expanded emergency facility is beautifully done. We are very pleased, and I applaud our emergency department staff for persevering throughout this lengthy and complex process and continuing always to provide excellent patient care.”
Katie Rhodes, board chair, reflected, “I’ve watched our community and its medical needs grow significantly over the years. This is the second major expansion of our emergency department at Parkland, the first occurring in 2008 when the department’s capacity was doubled. BJC and Parkland continue to be proactive in striving to meet this community’s medical needs. The board is thrilled with this expansion, and we trust it will serve this community for many years.”
Those familiar with Parkland’s former emergency department will easily notice the increased number of exam rooms, more spacious waiting room and convenient, enclosed walkway connecting it to the main hospital lobby. Other additions less easily observed are three new trauma rooms, three new psychiatric rooms which can be converted to regular emergency exam rooms, two redesigned nurses’ stations, and a new “results-pending” area. Many other additions and enhancements were included in this expansion.
Parkland Health Center is part of BJC HealthCare which also includes St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Barnes-Jewish Hospital, the teaching hospitals for Washington University School of Medicine.
