MAC Veterans Organization Holding Week-Long Recognition, Vets Day to Be Observed Nov. 8
With Veterans Day taking place during the month of November, the Mineral Area College Veterans Organization, under the leadership of Advisor Todd Kline, has over the past several years recognized MAC employees and students who are veterans of the U.S. armed forces at a special ceremony held on campus. This year, however, the club is extending its recognition of veterans over an entire week — beginning Wednesday, Nov. 1 and continuing through Wednesday, Nov. 8.
“This is a holiday event that is very near and dear to my heart,” said Kline, who is himself a veteran who served 20 years in the National Guard. “We’re calling it Veteran's Week and we have a whole host of events planned to celebrate it. The events will culminate on Nov. 8th, with a memorial ceremony held at the 10 o’clock hour. After the ceremony — around 10:30 — there will be the usual cookie, lemonade, and coffee refreshments.”
Kline said this year the club decided to go a step further in “raising the profile of veterans” on that day.
“From 11-1 p.m. on the 8th, the club will be holding a potluck luncheon to honor all MAC employees and students that served in the armed forces,” he said. If you know of any MAC employees — past or present — that have served, I’m hoping people will let me know.”
Kline noted that military wives and their families will also be invited to the luncheon.
In addition to the slate of activities and events, Kline added that his students have been working on a special PowerPoint program highlighting local Vietnam veterans.
“It’s a chronological listing of all Mineral Area, Vietnam-era veterans killed in action,” he said. “Each of the students was given a soldier to research and then they created a PowerPoint slide and a life summary. We still need to add a few, as some that were raised here moved to other towns.”
Asked why he became so focused on the project, Kline said, “Many of my drill instructors in ’83 were Vietnam vets. Many of my fellow ‘guard’ members also. I don’t want the memories of those killed in action to be forgotten.”
Following is a list of events planned for the week:
- Wednesday, Nov. 1 – The club will decorate the concourse area with departmental flags, bulletin boards, and other veteran memorabilia. It will also be the kickoff day for the employee/student door decorating contest.
- Saturday, Nov. 4 – The club has entered a float — a decorated 4-door pickup — in the Farmington Veterans Day Parade, which begins at 10 a.m. Joining them will be MAC student nurses. This year’s theme is “May We Never Forget & Forever Honor Our Veterans.”
- Monday, Nov. 6 – All MAC employees and students are encouraged to wear “camo” on Camouflage Day.
- Wednesday, Nov. 8 – The Veteran's Memorial Ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. in the Concourse Area on what has been designated Red, White and Blue Day when MAC employees and students are encouraged to wear patriotic colors to honor veterans. The ceremony will be followed by the potluck luncheon for veterans, their wives, and families. (The location is yet to be determined.)
